In May, Jarred Land posted on social media that RED would start to sell "some crazy colored Komodos to my friends and anyone else who want's be a little 'different'. It's important to note these early cameras are running beta firmware.
RED KOMODO Q&A
The final version of the software won't be made available until RED starts shipping the standard black models. Those are expected to arrive for another month or so. Holland has posted several videos and his initial reaction" Some early thoughts as I continue to dive in. Komodo is super compact. I knew this, but now that I've put a bazillion lenses on there, it's very much a whoa. Feels a bit like DSMC2 loaded with a lot of 'new'. He mentioned the captured images are "straight out of the camera" with a "wee bit of white balance.
The lens used was a Tokina Ciname Vista 25mm T1. Grossman compared the Komodo with Helium in an "qualitative test comparison" using both cameras maximum resolution and lowers compression. He also did some other ISO, high frame rate, and gimbal testing with Komodo. Check out the clips below. But Scott Baulkman hosted a nearly six hour live stream with Komodo owners that included Land, who pops in at the 2 hour 30 minute mark. Land pointed out that Komodo was originally conceived as a better crash camera, and has been in the works for about five years.
The idea being that Komodo could fit into tighter windows and produce better RAW footage than something like the GoPro. The camera has evolved a lot since then, and is still finding its way. What do you think of the camera so far?
Hit us up in the comments below. Anyway seems it's first firmware iteration, the real quality should be valued at december, where people use it, fight with problems, Red adjust and refine like for every brand and every camera. No other company can compete with that right now.
Sure, Blackmagic RAW is awesome, but it's bit. This camera will be a game changer for people to access one of the highest levels of professional raw codecs on the market, including myself.

It's just a pain to use, of course, but as soon as it hits bucks in MFT, I'm buying one!Body dimensions are very similar, despite the larger lens mount, but the sensor change gives not only more capture area, but opens the path to use a whole new set of lenses.
Extra resolution also gives you more room for reframing in editing and color correction. Blackmagic Design went, apparently, with the solution that can satisfy the most people in the near future, as lenses for the EF-mount are widely available, while lenses for the new RF-mount are slowly entering the market.
That would be the way to go, some people believe, especially because the new optical designs allowed by mirrorless cameras offer, as Canon and other brands claim, better quality. Not much is known about the camera, but the company used every opportunity in recent weeks to keep people talking about its Komodo.
There still is a bunch of time before the first batch starts shipping towards the end of the year and everything can and probably will change. But in the spirit of discovery… perhaps I can still stay inside those rules and tell you what Komodo is not:. Again, even at REDuser, despite the applause from many because of the mount used, that some believe to be the future, there is people asking for a Sony E-mount, forgetting that Sony keeps the mount exclusively to its cameras.
So, in the end, despite the eventual — and in many cases theoretical — advantages of the RF-mountthe RED Komodo dragon will not defeat the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, which has, one could say, a very attractive price for anyone wanting to step up to 6K and a popular mount, as the Canon EF is.
In the end, if this was a fantasy story, I would probably say that no dragon can defeat blackmagic…. Sign up for the ProVideo Coalition weekly e-newsletter and get the most popular articles, blogs, and reviews right to your inbox.

While the lone image doesn't show much more than a compact body with an interchangeable lens mount, Land is happy to tell you what Komodo isn't. It's not a replacement for the company's DSMC2 technology, one of the company's existing sensors or a module. And it's definitely not a big device -- it's no larger than 4 inches "in any dimension," Land said, with a weight less than 2 pounds. The biggest clue may involve the cost. This suggests it may be a compact yet high-end camera designed for remote control -- something you'd use either for specialized cinematography or as an inexpensive way into RED's camera system.
You might hear more about Komodo before long. Land noted that it's "alive and breathing," and that you'll likely see pro video producers field testing the design in the "next few weeks and months. This first version of RED Komodo was shipped to a very few and selected filmmakers. One of them that received this custom colored new model, is Philip Grossman. Grossman is an award-winning cinematographer and photographer. However, the specs are not final yet and will be sharpened and improved via extensive firmware updates. Regarding the specs list, explore the chart below to reveal what we know so far:.
One of the key factors in cinema cameras is indisputably image quality. Till now, this was a strange enigma regarding the Komodo. However, thanks to Grossman, we can now examine the real capabilities of the cameras. All the tests footage below made by Philip Grossman.
Make sure to check his YouTube channel for further descriptions and opinions. Both cameras were configured to maximum resolution and lowest compression. No grading was done. Cameras configuration as follows:. This is a low light test — comparison between Komodo and Helium. In this test both cameras were set to the following:. The cameras were placed approximately 9 feet from the subject wall. Philip cycled through the flashlight settings in the following order: 1 Lumen, 70 Lumens, lumens, lumens, lumens.
The clips were left native and not adjusted in any manner in order to give a baseline comparison. Basic color grading was applied.
However, no noise reduction. Check it out in the video below:. No black shading. NR was applied in DaVinci resolve on the right half of the image.

When comparing Komodo to the current RED lineupit's a bargain based on price alone. What are your thoughts on the Komodo? Did you order one? Let us know in the comments below. Hitchcock, Wells, Kubrick are rolling in there graves, how image capturing devices became "cheap, hi quality, mobile", I think now even on a large theater screen a professional wouldn't notice the difference between a RED, BMC or an ALEXA if it was well exposed and through a good pipeline, and that was proven almost ten years ago Would die to see Hitchcock's reaction to a Komodo or a bmpcc put in his hand, would love to see what he'll do with it.
He was constantly experimenting with new and different motion picture quality systems, from Vistavision to 3D. Welles too - it would finally be cheap enough for him to get what he needed to make his work without a studio system, and people would see it - he'd be doing stuff similar to Soderbergh, making movies on his own terms with cheap equipment and getting Netflix deals and alternative distribution ideas.
I imagine Kubrick would probably be more of a camera purist he used the outdated Mitchell BNC camera throughout his career and eschewed widescreen ratios because they didn't use the entire amount of available film stockbut who knows? Maybe he'd be like Steve Yedlin, Rian Johnson's cinematographer, whose extremely deep analysis of film vs digital is Kubrickian in its attention to detail and mastery of the technological process.
Kubrick might have consulted with someone like Yedlin and then ordered custom digital cameras from a company like Red, much like Fincher did for The Social Network. Kubrick probably would have enjoyed having high speed internet and an editing workstation and dubstage in his home since he hated to travel.
It would have been very interesting to see them all do stuff with these tools. NC stands for News Camera and at 40 lbs for the body and another lbs for the motor it was their 'lightweight' model.
